These are foods that give us that little extra, which makes all the difference to our feeling of well-being. Foods are usually classified on the basis of macro nutrients like carbohydrates, fats and proteins and micro nutrients like vitamins and minerals. Nutrition boosters have all these in the best form and make for a great snack or an addition to regular meals to bridge the gap between deficiencies and over eating.

Nuts are seeds of plants and power houses of nourishment .They are sources of unsaturated fats, high-quality vegetable protein, fiber, minerals, tocopherols, phytosterols, and phenolic compounds. By virtue of their nutritional composition, they are potent health boosters too. Clinical studies across the world have shown the positive effect of nuts on cardiovascular risk factors, weight management and to a lesser extent on cancer, inflammation and hypertension. The National Institute of Nutrition in its "Classification of foods based on functions" lists nuts and seeds in both Energy Rich foods and Body Building foods.

Nuts which are most consumed in India are almonds, walnuts, cashews and pistachios. To a lesser extent, pine nuts are also consumed. All of these are important sources of quality proteins for a predominantly vegetarian society like ours. They also add mono unsaturated fats and Omega -3 fats to our diets.

Dried fruits like raisins, dried apricot, dates and prunes are a storehouse of energy, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are dense sources of iron and potassium, both of which are very essential and often deficient in our meals alone. Dried raisins are also rich in a phytochemical called Resveratrol, which has shown to be protective against heart diseases, degenerative nerve diseases and Alzheimer's.

Taking just a handful of all of these daily or at least 3 times a week helps give that extra boost to your body.
